When you tribute summon a monster, can the tributing cards be from your hand or must they be on the field?

E.g. Dragonic Tactics: Tribute 2 dragon-type monsters to summon blah blah blah.
Does this mean the cards you tribute have to be on the field, or can you tribute them from your hand?

Tributing a monster means the monster leaves the field. For a monster to go from your hand is a discard, not a tribute.

They MUST be already summoned, and you have to wait a turn after you summon something to use it as a tribute (unless you are Synchro , Fusion, Ritual, XYZ, etc.) but for normal monsters you need too.

For a level 5 or 6 monster: you will need to tribute 1 monster on the field to Tribute Summon that level 5 or 6.

For a level 7 or 8: 2 tributes to summon it.

For 9 or higher: 3 tributes.

It may vary on card effects sometimes.

I hope I made it clear.

Anything that requires tribute must on the field. Level 5 and 6 monster require one tribute, Level 7 and higher require two tributes. There are also some cards that require 3 tributes but only if the card specifies it.

The sacrificing card is a material monster/ tribut. If you want to summon a high level monster then you have to sacrifice/ tribute required monsters from field only. In case of ritual summon you have to tribute from field or from hand. You can get basic info about tribute from "yugiohwiki". Enjoy the duels.

Tributing is defined in the rulebook as sending a monster your control to the Graveyard. Unless something explicitly says otherwise, a Tribute is always from the field.

On the field - say for a...

5 or 6 star monster - you'll need 1 tribute.

7 or 8 star monster - you'll need 2 tribute

9 or more - just 3 tributes are needed.

When tributed, these monsters go to the graveyard unless stated.
