First off, I know that double strike deals first strike damage then regular combat damage but my question is if Player A attacks with a 4/4 double strike and Player B blocks with a 2/2 would the second combat damage go over to the player?

Or would this only work if the 4/4 had trample?

This is what would happen:

During First Strike damage step, the Double Striker kills the 2/2. If it had Trample, 2 damage would go over.

During regular combat damage step, the Double Striker is still considered blocked, so it deals no combat damage during this step - regardless of whether it has Trample or not.

This has to do with the exact nature of combat rulings, which say that a blocked creature deals no combat damage if the blocker is removed after the Declare Blockers step. This is mostly to prevent players from going, "Oh, you're going to block my 10/10 with THAT one? Alright, I'll Shock it so that my 10 damage gets through."

Not so fun. It makes for some weird rulings elsewhere, though.

well since your creature with double strike can attack twice.

it would kill the 2/2 creature in the first attack and then its second attack would deal 4 direct damage to your opponent if he had no other creatures to block with.

Trample would just mean that player B would take 2 the first attack then 4 the second attack again assuming that player B has no other creatures to block with.
