I have been playing Magic for a few years now, and I really want to start playing at a more competitive level, yet I am having a hard time trying to find people to play test and train with anyone know of good places in Chicago to find people like me? Also I work fairly late on Fridays so FNM isn't a good option. Any help in finding players who want to play competitively that can help me get better is appreciated.

Here are some ways that I think can help you get started in play testing your deck.

1. Hang out in a local Hobby shop / Card shop

People who play MTG usually hang out to these places because they look for players like you or maybe look for cards they need from people who visit the shops. A good shop may have several tables and chairs for customers who would like to spend some time with people who have same interests as them and get to play MTG. I'm sure you'll find one near your place.

2. Start by joining an MTG forum

If you're having difficulty looking for a card shop near your place, then you can join a forum that is dedicated to MTG. This is really easy and convenient because you can just post a message and people in your area might have a similar question as you. They are looking for other players to test their decks. If not all but most of the ACTIVE players of MTG will be posting regularly in these forums. So, they will be more than happy to help you out in looking for a place to play test.

In some cases there are no shops near your area. But through MTG forums, I believe you can find a place where you can invite people, same as you, to have some good 'ol Magic discussion and practice to be more competitive.

I know that some players, who are far from the local card shop here in my country, hold their regular MTG meetings (and sometimes hold their SANCTIONED DCI tournaments) at a nearby Starbucks Coffee shop. I'm sure you'll find some fellow MTG players. It's good that you organize with players and find ANY place with some tables and chairs and make that your weekly hang-out (hopefully the owner of that place allows you to play there. At least you can ask them too.).

Not available during Friday nights? Not to worry. FNM is not the only place and time to practice with your deck! I hope what I've stated before, will help you get around this problem. I also would like to suggest that you can try other formats. Because from my experience and understanding, FNM usually host the Standard format of the game. So, by simply changing your format to Extended, Legacy or Vintage. You can test with your fellow format MTG players! :D Finding people will be easy.

So, in short, to find people to playtest with you. You need to hang out to a card shop or search through the internet by joining an MTG forum. :D

Good luck on your search.

Unfortunately, FNM is pretty much the best way to meet people who play magic. All the guys I play with I met at FNM. Since you can't attend FNM, you can try to find other MTG events on other days, possibly weekends. Try going to a pre-release or release event when a new MTG set comes out. These usually take place on weekends. You can play either draft, 2HG or sealed deck events, which will help you become a better overall player. I believe the pre-release of the next core set, M10, is this coming weekend. I'm sure there will be a pre-release event somewhere in Chicago that you can attend. Local venues in Chicago that host FNM events may also host other tournaments on other days of the week. If Wizard's store locator doesn't help you find anything, try a meetup website. Another option is to download Magic Workstation and play magic against opponents online. Unlike Magic Online, which costs money, Magic Workstation is free (note: if you download MWS, you have to download an MTG plugin, as MWS doesn't come with MTG pre-installed). Most players on MWS are competitive players, and you can play other formats, not just Standard. I use MWS and it is pretty good for play testing. Some people on it can be jerks, though, especially to newer players.

I think your best bet is to check out the M10 pre-release event. You'll get some new cards and get to play some competitive magic. You might also meet some people in your area who play test. If you can't make the M10 event, the Zendikar expansion comes out in September. There will be a pre-release event for that set as well.

Good luck.

It's good enough, they are simply video games and deliver you whatever to do. It's no longer damaging or whatever however generally is a concern when you spend such a lot cash on them that you haven't any left. We all like specific matters and that is most commonly his suggestion of amusing. But he must positioned apart a few cash, and maintain a few for matters like those. This no longer handiest indicates accountability, however will get ready him for the the long run on the grounds that that is what you need to do. Keep cash for relatively primary matters, and for maintain a few cash for his activities and another matters he desires to shop for. Also, it does not relatively subject if he does not develop out of it. There are tons of adults that play those sort of video games. Some of those video games are very tricky and may also be well in your mind and support you to suppose in specific methods. As I stated earlier than, so long as he units apart a few cash and manages it adequately it does not relatively subject.

If you don't mind being forced to pay for a second collection of card, MTG Online is a good option.
