Here's how you play: First, you lay out the cards like a traditional klondike game, but instead of starting to play from that point, you continue to lay the cards, face up and starting from the second row in, until all the cards are laid out (you will end at the bottom of the last row). Looking at only the uncovered cards at the bottom of each row, you look for a descending order card in the same suit. For example, if the five of diamonds is showing at the bottom of row three, you scan the rest of the face up cards for the four of diamonds. If the four of diamonds is showing in row five, for example, you pick it up (and all of the cards that are "attached" to it) and lay all those cards below the five of diamonds. (Any aces that are "freed up" at the bottom of a row are placed at the side where you can begin to build an ascending "same suit" pile.) Then you move to the next row. The object is to get all the suits from Ace to King laid out at the side. Does this make sense, or ring a bell with anyone? I've been playing it for years but can't find an online version, and as it's very hard to win, it would be nice if the computer could do all the shuffling for a change!

The game is called Russian Solitaire which is thought by some to be the most difficult of all solitaire games to win. Russian Scorpion is the same game with more cards faceup making it considerably easier to win. There is a two deck version of Russian Solitaire called Big Russian. Russian Scorpion and Big Russian are contained in the Solitaire Games of Skill collection found at http://www.solitaireinnovations.com. As you well know, it is a time consuming task to scan the layout for matching cards when playing Russian Solitaire. The version of Russian Solitaire at http://www.solitaireinnovations.com/free_games.html saves the player work by flagging all possible moves. It also throws out some of the unwinnable games. For example a consecutive sequence of cards in the same column such as 5 of hearts, 3 of hearts, and 4 of hearts would make the game unwinnable Using this version might help you to win more often and it is free, no strings attached. There is also a free version of Russian Solitaire in the Pysol collection which can be downloaded using the link at http://www.solitaireinnovations.com/links.html

No, it's not spider solitaire. You lay out ALL the cards at the beginning (i.e. no stockpile of cards to draw from)
