Question:
Why do people feel that all collections have to be profitable?

I really love artistic and finely made playing cards. No specific reason other that. I'm going to start collecting playing cards for that reason. However, almost everyone I tell says "Well, are they profitable?" "Are you going to be able to turn a profit?"

I feel like if you really like something and decide to collect, that those questions are in your mind, whether they are in the front or back of your mind depends on you, but I feel like that not what all collections should be about. Not all collections should be about profit. So why is it so important to people when collecting? Shouldn't you just collect things that you love, because whether or not all of my cards become profitable, I don't see myself selling them.

bc money rules the human mind. plus u put so much money in the collection, that not being able to get that much or more back and just getting something nice to look at seems like a stupid move business and money wise.

ppl are so use to hearing about collections that ended up being worth a lot of money.

these collections started off as a hobby. then ppl would find out that its worth a lot when they decide to sell it bc they need the money.

so its turned into a money making fad.

that why ppl dont look at it as just a hobby anymore

That's just how some people think. Everything comes down to money for them. I am like you. I only have one collection right now. It's baseballs - NOT autographed, NOT ones that where hit out of the park, NOT ones that broke a world record. I just buy team logo balls, from the different ball parks I go to. I doubt any of them will be worth any money, ever. But I like it. I tried to get into stamp collecting, coin collecting and a few others. But they just weren't "me." I didn't care about those. The balls I collect remind me of the fun times I had at the games, and who I was with.

I'm about to start a second hobby. Postcrossing (I just heard about it.) It's exchanging and collecting postcards with people from around the world. I think this would be a lot of fun. Not profitable, but interesting. You never know what country you will be receiving one from, when, or what the postcard looks like.

Ignore those people, their definition of a "collection" is their trade binder. meaning the stuff they sell or rip off little kids to aquire.

I have a collection of pokemon and yugioh cards where they may not be the most expensive cards but they are still hard to find and I like them.

they mainly get as many money cards as they can then sell them off in bulk for tons of cash. it's not a collection it's a quick money binder.

You can continue to collect items you love, you don't really have to sell them if you don't want to.
