I know how to play Magic. I've played against my friends using their decks, but I want to start playing at events.
I want to know the best way to start playing. I only own a straight out of the box deck. what do I need if I go to FNM?
Is there an amateur level place to start playing magic, not a tutorial but like an amateur level FNM?
I don't want to play any online version of Magic though.

Some stores have rookie leagues where you can play with other new people. Call your local stores and find out if they have anything like that.

Depending on your local store, FNM magic events could include standard, modern, and draft tournaments. I would recommend starting by doing drafts. In this format you don't need to bring a deck with you. You get three packs of cards, and you open each one in turn, pick one card from the pack, and pass the rest around the table. The idea is to create the best deck you can with the cards you can choose from (land is usually available for free). Once you have your cards picked out, other players will probably gladly help you build your deck and give you pointers before you play. The best part is you don't need to buy expensive cards before you play, and you have as much chance of getting good cards as everyone else at the table. And it's a great way to learn about deck construction.

Play drafts for a few months, and then move on to standard. You should have a better idea of how to play against good players, how to build a deck, and how cards interact by then.

Most events are standard (type 2), but there are also official sealed deck and draft events. But give it time before you enter a big tournament, and be prepared to lose for a while.

Don't bother going to FNM if all you have an an Intro pack or something. Those are just made to teach the gme and you while get whooped on.

You should probably buy booster packs and change your deck a bit. You can practice by going to your local card shops's Friday night magic.
