There's a lovely search tool available at:
http://sales.starcitygames.com//spoiler/spoiler.php
which lets you search for specific "Text Contains" - you can search for any particular phrase you like and find all cards that fit., so if you find that you like what Empyrial Archangel does, you can search for "All damage that would be dealt to you", and find 105 different cards that will redirect damage from you to something, or prevent the damage entirely, etc.
Since you don't care if they're legal or not, I'd suggest going for the more overpowered, dual-function and re-usable ones - like Tangle disables you're opponent's army for a couple of turns (assuming no hasted new creatures), or Spike Weaver can be used 3 times.
It's also good to have multiple ways to achieve the same result - instant cards, creature abilities, no-mana options, etc.
Good luck!
