I play Magic, and I don’t think of myself as a nerd. (Perhaps I’m being overly optimistic…) However, I can suggest a few good decks for you.
It all depends on the format that you are playing in. The easiest to access format is called standard. This consists of the latest two blocks and the most current core set. (Right now, Standard consists of cards from Lorwyn, Morningtide, Shadowmoor, Eventide, Shards of Alara, and Tenth Edition.) Great decks to play are Faeries (Little blue fliers that ride the broken 2-mana tribal enchantment to victory) Doran Rock, (My favorite deck of choice. I play it in every format. Doran, a virtual 5/5 creature, can come into play on turn 2, literally breaking your opponent’s backs. Turn 2 Doran is very very hard to recover from.) and Quick & Toast (5-color control deck that mixes a manabase from hell consisting of all of the colors of magic, counterspells, plus whatever you want, since you can play any color in there.)
In Extended, which consists of the last 6 years or so of Magic cards, there is ElfBall (Green Elf Combo deck that produces a horde of insects that provide the win condition) Affinity (Evil robots with high mana costs that happen to come into play for free if oyu have enough artifacts in play) All-Out Red (turn 1: Play a Mountain, get up to five mana, cast a huge creature. Turn 2: Opponent concedes.) Swans Combo, and a lot more.
In Legacy, there is a whole range of decks. The most fun to play with, and the most broken, at least in my opinion, is Dredge. (Step 1: Get most of your deck into your graveyard. Step 2: Do nasty things by sacrificing 3x Narcomeba to flash back Dread Return, reanimnating a huge creature along with a horde of zombies that beat in for the win.) There is also Stax (Stack every single card that increases mana costs against your opponent, kill off their lands, then beat them down with a very small creature. There are a lot more decks in Legacy, but I don’t have room to go through them all.
Finally, there is Vintage, a fantastic format. In this format, every card is allowed, and cards are not banned but restricted. Decks often win on turn one or two, making the player not sure whether losing the dice roll will make them lose the entire game.
If you need any of these decks explained in more detail, simply ask it in another question or contact me through Y! Answers. I’ll be glad to help you out.
Hope that Helped!
