Question:
Yu-Gi-Oh: Battle Damage and Direct Damage?

Well there I was one fine morning, chatting with my favorite Yu-Gi-Oh dueling partner, when he pointed out an interesting claim that I'm not sure about. So without further delay, here's my question today:

Battle Damage. It's when a monster attacks another monster and the difference is dealt in Life Point damage. I'm curious, is it the same thing as Direct Damage? Is Direct Damage considered to be Battle Damage?

For example, my opponent activates Clock Tower Prison. It gets 4 counters, and suddenly they take no Battle Damage. Does that mean that I cannot attack them directly? Or can I?

Clock Tower Prison
[During each of your opponent's Standby Phases, put 1 Clock Counter on this card. While there are 4 or more Clock Counters on this card, you do not take any Battle Damage. When this card with 4 or more Clock Counters is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, Special Summon 1 "Destiny Hero - Dreadmaster" from your hand or Deck.]

Battle Damage and Direct Damage are different in a way.

Battle damage as the name suggests comes from the damage step in the battle phase, technically it's like Blue-Eyes destroying Dark Magician, the 500 damage is battle damage. There are two types of battle damage, as far as I know, one is done to players and the other is done to the monsters. In the scenario, Dark Magician, in a sense, took 2500 battle damage that is why it is destroyed, the remaining 500 you took. In the case of Clock Tower Prison, since it prevents the owner from taking battle damage, the 500 damage will still be prevented, however Dark Magician will still take the 2500 and will be destroyed. In another case, where it prevents the monster being destroyed by battle, like a face-up marshmallon in attack position. When Blue-eyes attacks, the damage done to marshmallon is prevented and marshmallon is not destroyed, however you will take damage equal to the difference in attack which is 2700 life points. In the same situation with Blue-Eyes attacking Dark Magician, when you activate Waboku. It will prevent both the damage that was suppose to be done to Dark Magician and you. Neither monster is destroyed and you don't loose life points.

A Direct Damage is any form of damage that can be infilcted to a player using either a card effect (e.g. Ookazi, Poison of the Old Man) or battle damage in a form of a direct attack.

So Direct Damage and Battle Damage may be the same in a direct attack situation, but not always the same.

Okay, here are the simplified definitions of the three types of damage you are talking about: Battle Damage: damage done by an attacking monster Effect Damage: damage caused by the effect on a card Direct Damage: damage done directly to your life points by either a monster or an effect You see, direct damage can be the same as battle damage if a monster attacks your life points directly. To answer the question you're asking, yes, Defense Draw will turn the damage to zero because it is battle damage as well as direct damage. Hope this helps.

When "clock tower" is on the field and your opponent has 5 counters on it, the opponent receives no battle damage or direct damage

(both involve monster attacking).

The only way to get passed it, is to destroy clock tower or

remove it from the field.

or( inflict damage ) to your opponent with cards like "fire trooper"

Good point it means you can kill there monsters like a Blue Eyes White Dragon kills a Jinzo. Jinzo dies but they don't lose 600 life points you can attack directly to gain a card effect but there is no life point loss. But in Clock Tower Prison you can attack directly as long as you don't kill a monster so when they have no monsters you can with Jinzo to take away 2400 life points.

When Clock Tower Prison has 4 counters, you cannot damage them by Battle or Direct Damage (they both basically the same thing except Direct Damage causes more). So basically, once CTP has 4 counters, you cant damage them but you can attack, its just that you cant damage the opponent.

Hope thats wat your looking for!
