So me and my friend were playing a game of magic the other day and I played my legendary creature sliver overlord, which then he used clone legion to gain a copy of it and then he took control of my sliver overlord. With the new rule set would one of them be sent to the graveyard? Or both? How dose the new legendary creatures rules effect this case specifically?

The revised "Legend Rule" would only affect if either you or your opponent control two Legendary Permanents of the same name. So if you had two Sliver Overlords, you have to chose which one dies. The same would apply to your friend if the same happened to him.

Your friend had used Clone Legion, it will make a token that's a copy of Sliver Overlord(and other creatures you control) on his side of the battlefield, thus the Legend Rule will not take effect.

Also to cover this quick, Planeswalkers also follow this in a similar way. If you control two Planeswalkers of the same Planeswalker type (Example: two different Chandra cards), you have to chose which one dies, while you and your opponent can both have a planeswalker of the same type.

The current rules will require him to send one of them to the graveyard. He can choose which one he will send to the graveyard.

The pre-Theros rules would have required both of them to be sent to the graveyard.

No they both remain unless destroyed by another card.
